Are You My Next Boss?

Everyone has a job, but some people have - The Job. I’ve found a lot of these people on Twitter, they either have started their own companies or they’re working with a company that they are passionate about. Right now, I have a job, it allows me to continue working in HR but it’s not – The Job. It doesn’t satisfy me fully, doesn’t give me what I want out of my role. This is nothing against the company; it is just the way that it is.

But I want more; I want – The Job. I want something that will stretch me and challenge me, something that I can get passionate about. It is no surprise many HR roles focus a lot on administration and while I have the skills, I want to be able to add more, to know that the work I’m doing is adding value (sorry for the buzz word). Let’s be realistic, all jobs include administration and boring mundane tasks. I’m talking about balance - you do the filing, but you get to work on a project.

If you’ve read my blog before you’ll know what I’m passionate about, simple, logical solutions that help people to do their jobs better, I believe a lot of it comes down to communication. I think that if you’re writing a policy your employees should be able to understand it, that if you’re putting a process in place it should make sense for the end user and make their lives easier not harder.

If you’re into personality profiling, I’m generally identified as creative, organised, good at detail, and task focused. Some of those things don’t quite fit together do they? Obviously, personality profiling has its limits. When it comes down to it, you use different traits at different times based on the situation, and I’m no different.

What’s in it for you?

Well, I’m passionate (you got that already didn’t you?). I keep up to date what is happening in the industry through reading, events in Melbourne and seemingly endless study. I’m now working through a Professional Diploma of HR with AHRI, which offers advanced standing into a number of Masters Programs, I have my eye on the Masters of HR and OD at Southern Cross University and will apply at the end of the year.

But it takes more than passion and theory doesn’t it? In my HR roles as Administrator and Officer I have built on my knowledge and created worthwhile skills, if you want to know more you can have a look at my resume.

What am I looking for?

I've worked in not for profit and government and want to be able to move into private business (small, medium, large – you name it). When I thought about it I came up with a list of companies that I feel match the values and culture I am looking for. Mostly, I want to be stretched and challenged and to take a step up. To work somewhere that acts with integrity and values HR, where I can make a contribution to the business and work with people I can learn from. It’s not about a title, because that doesn’t define me, it’s about – The Job.

Not too much to ask for is it? Enter, Gen Y being so demanding here! If you think you’d like to be my next boss, you can find out more about me via my blog and my ‘who am I?’ page and about the types of companies I want to work in.
