Got Trust?

I finally got my hands on the most recent issue of BRW that lists the Top 50 Great Places to Work in Australia and while there are a number of points that are made about great place to work there was one in particular that stood out to me.

In all the companies listed and profiled a high level of trust was a big factor in a company being a good place to work. This was trust in a number of forms, it was manager’s trusting their staff to be able to do their work, it was companies trusting their staff to be accountable for their own work, it was employees trusting that their company would do right by them. The Trust Index is actually one of the factors that leads to a company being in the list, in order to be a great company to work for you have to have trust. The company that conducts the research for the Great Places to Work defines a great place to work where employees, ‘trust the people they work for, have pride in what they do, and enjoy the people they work with’.

Trust is a funny thing, it can be earnt, it can be built and it can very easily be lost. Many people undervalue trust and do not see how important it is, but the relationship between a manager and employees or a company and employees is like any relationship. There needs to be a certain level of trust in order for the relationship to be successful.

Trust builds trust, if you treat people like you don’t trust them, squirrel away information, hide information and keep people on a need to know basis but no one needs to know the business will suffer. If instead you empower people to be able to make decisions, delegate tasks, give people ownership and keep them informed on how the business is going they will feel that they have more of a say in how the business is being run. This leads to people being empowered.

According to the Great Place to Work Institute Australia, trust leads to greater productivity and profitability. When people feel they have the trust of their managers they will invest more time and effort into their work, they will not be afraid to make mistakes or take risks that will benefit the business. Feedback from people at companies in the list includes, 'most employees here are given a tremendous amount of responsibility while at the same time they are allowed an extraordinary level of independence to choose work styles, and even work schedules, to exercise their responsibilities.'

If you don’t believe that trust is important then this statistic might help change your mind, Deloitte Australia has received 30,534 job applications in the last year. By being one of the great places to work you receive the benefits of having the best people working for you.

How much do you value trust in your business?
