Life Defining Moments

Last week I had the opportunity to hear Li Cunxin speak, if you don't know of Li's story I highly recommend reading his book or watching the movie, 'Mao's Last Dancer'.

Li spoke about the small moments that resulted in his success, when he was chosen for the ballet it was because his teacher hesitated and asked the government officials, 'what about him?' That one moment, that question was the first that led to him becoming one of the best dancers in the world and enabled him to help his family out of poverty.

He went on to say, 'if we do not pay attention to the small moments, the small opportunities that pass us by - we won't notice the life defining moment when it happens.' When was the last time you stopped to pay attention to what was going on around you? Li continued and said, 'we live in a life of endless and boundless opportunities and possibilities, yet how many times do we stop to notice the small moments?'

I often look around on the tram on my way to work and look at people and the majority of them don't look happy. We each have the capacity and the opportunity to create great success in our lives. Because talent only counts for so much - the rest of it is determination, it's courage, it's chutzpah.

When it comes to success Li said, 'you can't get to great success without having heart breaking moments'. We have so many opportunities and so many possibilities that it can be easy to think that the small things that really count are meaningless. But if we can't enjoy the process, if we can't appreciate the journey, how will we ever appreciate the end result? Chances are you won't even realise when you've gotten there.

Life's worst moments happen at the most inopportune times, and it is at these times that we have to refresh our vision. We have to ask ourselves, 'what kind of life do I want to live? What kind of journey do I want to travel?'

Enjoy the small moments, and you might be able to fully realise the impact of the big moments.
