When I read back over my blog posts or just think about the things I hear that I jot down and that become posts a lot of the topics are around people being made to feel important. While people want to feel that they are part of something bigger, that they contribute to something greater than them, they also want to feel important as an individual.
When I heard Li Cunxin speak a couple of weeks ago he spoke about Teacher Gao, who he said had the qualities of a true leader. Teacher Gao took the time to find out about each student as an individual, he found out what was important to them, he found out what drove them to reach their goals. For Li, the thing that drove him was to see his mother with a full belly and a smile on her face. Teacher Gao approached the way he dealt with each student based on what was important to them and therefore was able to tap into their passion.
The thing I always take away when I watch an episode of the Undercover Boss is the stories that people have. Yes, they come to work everyday because they need money, but the driver for them might be their children, it might be that they overcame an injury or an illness and it is the story behind the person that their manager's focus on. If you stop to think about it, what's your driver? Why do you do the things you do?
Everyone wants to be heard. People want to feel that they are chosen, that they are important, that they matter.
If you don't get this by now, well you probably never will.
